Choosing the Right Movement

First time buying a watch? Are you confused about the different types of watch movements available? Watch Republic is here to break it down for you with our guide to choosing the right watch movement. After all, the movement is the heart of the watch and what makes your timepiece tick. It is the first thing you should decide on if you’re serious about choosing your first watch.

Quartz or Mechanical?

There are countless watch movements crafted by different watch makers but each of these will fall either under Quartz or Mechanical. The fastest way to differentiate the two movements is by looking at the second hand of the watch. On a quartz watch, the second hand has the tick-tick motion that moves once per second while mechanical watches have a smooth, sweeping seconds motion.

We’ve picked out some of our best watches to help you get started on your journey to selecting the right watch.

Quartz watches are the most accurate watch movement because they're powered by batteries, which means they don’t need to be regularly wound nor do they rely on your body’s movement to run. They're also really affordable because you'll only have to replace your batteries—which don't even cost more than a burger and fries—every three years!

Mechanical watches are more retro, analog and cool, like your vinyl collection. Unlike Quartz watches which  require the use of batteries, a mechanical watch uses energy from a wound spring to power the watch. The act of winding makes mechanical watches a more popular choice for collectors– many reporting  that they enjoy the involvement and the connection they form with their watch.

The automatic is a design that falls under the Mechanical movement. Watches with automatic movements are very popular because you don’t need to wind it on the daily. As long as the watch is worn regularly, it will keep on ticking even when you pass it down to the next generation.
